Motorhome 230-VAC alternator sets.
Hi Derek,
Motorhome 230-VAC alternator sets.
The right kind of machine is stocked by the motorhome constructors, eg Jurgen/WJ or AC etc. They combine lightness and "silence" (they all make some noise) with all the considerations as to vibration, fire-safety, cooling and exhaust removal in a small installed enclosure. The draw-back is that they are expensive, and you will not escape this. If you buy portable machines, they are intended for use in the open. If you buy serious acoustically insulated standby equipment, it is bulky and heavy.
Remember the following:
1. Many camp-grounds ban the use of generator sets and make no exceptions to this. There is always noise, but worse, there is the drift of exhaust emissions that annoy those downwind, and these are dangerous if they get back into the interior of a motorhome or into a side-tent. CO lethal concentration is only 1 part in 300 by volume.
2. Check the starting current of the aircon, as this can be far in excess of its running spec, and gene rating is subject to its ability to deal with this heavy transient load. One needs a "slow-trip" characteristic.
3. An automotive aircon (typically 8 kW) is almost ten times more powerful that any motorhome cabin mains-driven aircon, because of the huge "cold loss" from the vehicle when moving, so don't think that you can use an accessory aircon on the road using the gene-set with any success.
With electricity being almost standard at resorts, the expense (and extra mass) of a gene-set is hardly warranted, but if you feel you need to have it, you need to have it. You find very few motorhomes at rallies with installed genes. Remember the WEB. Its hugely powerful in finding what there is available.
Go well
Richard.
