Rally Reports

Report for Northvaal Motorhome Club Valentine’s Rally at Monateng Caravan Lodge on 17th to 19th February 2012.

We arrived at the venue at 11hrs. There were already 15 motorhomes there – 6 had arrived on Thursday evening. It was HOT. Monateng is a beautiful park well maintained and managed.

The Patterson’s had arrived ahead of us. They were planning a special weekend – their daughter Elaine was visiting them from the USA. They had even brought their caravan for Elaine and Grandpa to sleep in.  Grandpa, sad to say had a fall in the shower which caused quite a stir because Marian had to go into the Gentlemen’s ablution to help him. After all the trouble they had gone to  set up camp and getting their TV up and running they had to  break up camp and go home so that they could take Grandpa to the doctor. Pleased to say all is well that ends well – Grandpa is now recovered.

Miles and Laeticia had their two beautiful grandkids with them. Laetitia must have been very tired by Sunday evening. Johan and Lorraine Potgieter also had their children and grandchildren visiting. Good to have kids with us on our weekends away.

A quick afternoon rain-shower made us delay our usual Sundowners get-together.

Never the less as soon as the rain stopped we had our usual get together exchanging news and views since our last rally. It turned out to be a beautiful evening - the rain had cooled everything down. We sat outside until well after 19hrs. Tony welcomed new members – Barry Newland and Joy.

During the night we had a severe storm with heavy rain sending us all scrambling to close air vents to stay dry.

Saturday morning we awoke to the sound of kids playing. The camp was full – lots of campers.   Ron and Shirley were “paymasters” for the weekend and because they had been renovating their Bathroom were only able to be there on Saturday morning to do their duty.  It was amusing to hear all the good humoured bantering going on whilst people were paying. Some of our members took part in the game drives offered by Monateng but most of us were just happy to laze around and enjoy the company of others. The swimming pool was well used by all – it was very much warmer at Monateng than in Johannesburg.

We celebrated our Valentine’s Evening with a “Potjie” evening.  Johan, Mario, Mike, Hansie, Philip, Lionel, Heinn, and Alan each made their favourite potjie. We had a wonderful selection – Lamb, Pork, Beef, Chicken, Steak and Kidney, Tripe, Lamb shortrib and shin .Four ladies had cooked rice, samp and Polento. Ice cream and chocolate sauce was on the menu for desert.  The venue lent itself so well to the whole evening with an open boma surrounded by a thatched veranda where we could sit under shelter should the rain come down. Each lady was responsible for decorating her table in the Valentine’s theme. After supper we danced under the stars to muisic provided by Peter Woods who had organised a sound system.

During Saturday night the rain came down hard again.  We awoke to a very wet campsite. We were very lucky with the weather as it only rained during the night.

On Sunday morning a short meeting was followed by a scrumptious tea.. It was agreed that Monateng is one of those venues we would love to visit again.

Now we have our next Rally to look forward to - followed by four days at Overston.

BARHAM BAY - WITBANK

BARHAM BAY  -  WITBANK  -

By  Philip and Nakkie Theron:

 20  -  22  January   2012

And so it happened  -  “Noordvaal”  Region had a flying start.

BARHAM BAY  - Yes what a beautiful place – close to the “Witbank”  Dam with each site having its own little “Thatch” -  The ablutions are very tidy and clean and there is even “Family Bathrooms”.

We left our home at 11h00 on Thursday the 19th  Arriving at 13h00 together with one of our SIX little grandsons - by the way this was his first time to come along  - “Kiano”  who will turn 4 years old in March thoroughly enjoyed his time with us

The Power „Voltage“  was a bit of a „Schlep“ it hovered between  190  - 200v  - In our case we had an on and off situation the whole weekend where our Motorhomes safety system kept on cutting out.

It was good to see Shirley  and Jill – and our hearts and prayers are with them during this trying  time in their lives.

Warm swembaddens vir ons wat „koulik“ is – dit kom maar so met die „gracefulness“ saam.

A heated “Splash”  pool at the outside bar with some “built in the water” stools for those who like to “kuier” and “water-chill”  at the same time. An aviary and cold water “kiddies” pool with 2 small waterslides  and a big outside  coldwater pool is only some of the outstanding

Qualities of “Barham Bay”.  Friday during the day we went together with little Kiano to the Cocktail-Bar-Pool  and had a “Cocktail”  that hit us between the eyes.

We had “sundowners”  on a beautiful green open area next to the dam whilst the sun set in an array of colors whilst the other campers in the resort enjoyed water sports.

Sunday Morning church was held in front of the Motorhome of Boetie and Jill where there happened to be a lovely awning and was surrounded with a fence which made it nice and private  -  Boetie was so kind as to swing his Motorhome around so that we can easily accommodate the Service as well as the „Chairmans Tea“.  A “Granchild” weekend was discussed and decided on for the Kareekloof weekend in March.  It is with sadness that we had to learn of the “passing”  of  Heliott Botha  wife of Japie Botha on the 22nd of January.

The only thing that put me “OFF”  was the “Honey Suckle -  Sucking Suzie”  call it what you may to empty the “French Drain”  right in from of our Motorhome for a good part of almost 3 hours  Eish   I  have NO  AIRFRESHNER  left in my Motorhome.

An so we shall – with the grace of God see each other again – So therefore we say to all Keep Well  -  Bly Gesond!!

Motorhome Club of S.A. Mpumalanga Region.

Six years ago, on the eleventh of September 2005, an historical event took place.

Twelve motor homes converged on Elangeni caravan park near Waterval Onder for an informal MCSA rally organised by Doug Tullis, who was keen on starting a new MCSA

Region in Mpumalanga. The purpose of this rally was to discuss ways and means to do this and to assess how members felt about this proposal. After a very pleasant weekend and much discussion it was decided unanimously that we would start a new region. Members of the MCSA National committee who attended the rally and advised us how

to proceed were Vic Maritz, ( Then chairman ) Lesley Farquaharson, (Secretary ) and Eric Naudè ( Legal adviser, who explained the requirements in terms of the MCSA constitution.) An interim committee was elected, comprising Francois de Wet, chairman,

Ingrid Barnard, secretary, Albert Prinsloo, treasurer with Doug Tullis and Snakes Snyman as additional members. A letter requesting the approval of a new region to be established in Mpumalanga and signed by 12 members was submitted to the national committee by Francois de Wet at the national annual general meeting at Koppisol in October 2005. The new region was approved and has been growing steadily over the past six years.

There are many beautiful resorts with excellent facilities in Mpumalanga, including the Kruger National Park, but due to the long distances members travel to attend rallies, they

agreed that they would only rally every two months, and that summer rallies would be held on the highveld and winter rallies including the annual Kruger Park tour would be held in the winter months.

Mpumalanga region has developed its own character and culture over the past six years.

We conduct our meetings in afrikaans, as our members are predominantly afrikaans speaking but we do our best to make our english speaking members welcome. Our Sunday morning devotions are sometimes held in english. We are like one big family, where everybody knows each other and cares for one another.

After 36 happy rallies, including six Kruger tours we had our birthday rally at Seekoeigat (See Photos) in September. This was the first time we rallied there and we found it to be a delightful spot on the Olifants river. There was nice lawn, shade, a swimming pool and a big lapa and braai facility where Tienie, John, Cules and helpers prepared delicious potjiekos for Saturday`s evening meal and Isak made his famous braaipap with all the trimmings. It is a quiet and peaceful park with good fishing in the river, but there are crocodiles, so don’t leave your catch in a keep net !

Twenty motor homes arrived for our 36th rally, including five couples who attended our first rally at Elangeni. They were Vic and Helene Maritz, Cules and Istine Visser, Francois and Betsie de Wet, Snakes and Rita Snyman and Doug and Roley Tullis.

Old friends from North Vaal such as Stan and Lesley Worrall, Koos and Marie Bekker and Hansie Joubert and Aloma were also there.

With Mpumalanga Greetings Francois de Wet.
