Message Hi.

My wife and I are planning to have a Motormome custom built for a trip around Southern Africa lasting about a year. Is there someone in the club that could offer advice before we start?

We are considering something on a Sprinter 518 chassis. Is there perhaps a second hand one that may be available towards the end of the year?

Thank you,
Roger Ford.

Message Last week going over the Outeniqua Pass between Outshoorn and George i was stopped by the provincial traffic police for having my back licience plate obscured by my two bicycles on the carrier at the back of my motorhome. However the said gentleman indicated that i needed a professional driving licience for the motorhome as the GVM was over 3500kg. Even though i have a code 10 heavy duty licience he was not interested and indicated that i should upgrade my licience. To my knowledge this is not a requirement in the Western Cape and nowhere can i find any published information on this. This is going to play havoc with the motorhome industry as well as all of us who currently own a motorhome. Could any members who have knowledge of this in the WC let me know whether this is correct or is the guy smoking something.
Appreciate whatever information is available.
Many thanks.

 Reply:

The issue of the obscured number plate is a valid one; there should be a second plate attached behind the bicycles so that the registration is easily readable from the rear of the vehicle. The AARTO rules on this are severe.

Motorhomes are  neither buses nor goods vehicles, and thus the Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) requirement does not apply. The applicable regulation has been listed on our  web site, as this problem continually crops up in disputes with traffic officials on the road. BUT, your motorhome windscreen  licence disc MUST record the vehicle type as CARAVAN, otherwise you can and will be fined for not having a driver's licence that does not include a PrDP.

Traffic regulations are National; it does not matter which province you are in.

A-Frames

Please can you ask the members of MCSA who have had fold up type A-Frames fitted to their motorhomes to please contact me or simply just send me an SMS so that I may contact them myself.
I placed an advert on the website in Nov 2011 (Articles) but have had no response whatsoever.
All I need please are the contact details of the people who manufacture and install A-Frames for the motorhoming fraternity here in the Gauteng area. I thought the club would be good place to start.
I live in Bronkhorstbaai but can be contacted on cell. 0827101048 or on e-mail : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Mr Richard Clark said he will place my request in the Motorhomer magazine so long.

Hope you can help me in this regard please.

Thank you,
Philip Kannemeyer

Message We would like to take our 4 year old grand daughter camping but her Mom is not happy about the safety of her traveling in our Motor Home. She is worried about airbags if she travels seatbelted in the front seat. She is concerned about lack of security if she travels in the back with me with the table up. The front seat belt does swivel around to the seat behind thee passenger seat but then doesn't have the connection to clip it in.
Does anybody have any suggestions or comments to make?
